Fledgling Fashionista

Hmmmm…

Well let’s see.  It’s been a little over a month since I chopped off my hair. It’s growing fairly quickly, but it may be because now I can see the progress versus trying to discern how much hair that was nearing the center of my back had grown.

I did a really quick twist out last night. I was grading fiction discussions for my students and was playing in my hair as I did so. The BF noted it looked like I was locking my hair again. That’s how I started them six years ago so I imagined it did. I took the twist out after a couple of hours, but I loved how it defined my curls even more and gave me more length.  A handful of coworkers noticed and liked it too.

Speaking of length, I blew out my Afro this weekend and I have more hair on my head than I thought. I can’t wait to see what the next few months bring in terms of additional length and styling ability.

So long ago…

I am fully aware I have been neglecting this blog. I really do feel badly about it too. It’s just that I am so tired most days when I get home that I don’t think about posting. I leave my house around 6 am, get to work at 7, leave at 3:30 and get home around 4:45.  Then there’s cooking, prepping for the two courses I’m teaching this fall and then trying to have some semblance of a life before I fall into bed around 9 or 9:30.

Certainly I have been changing fashion wise since the last time I wrote. I’ve cleaned out about a third of my closet and have started replacing my wardrobe with clothes I am a little more happy with. I still have a weakness for thrift stores and visit them a few times a month.

I guess the biggest thing is that I finally cut off my hair. Yep! After six years of growing my locs to about the middle of my back I’m back to my natural curls. It’s short, but I know from experience that my hair grows quickly. I love my natural hair so I’ve decided to give it the same six years I gave my locs and see how long/big I can grow it.

I’m rapidly approaching my 31st birthday (December 14th) and I’ve come so far this year. I’m working on my style, I have a good job (albeit stressful as all get out some days), I’m loved and things can only go up from here.

I’ll post up some hair pics after dinner.

Purses, dresses and haircuts, oh my!

-I found another maxi dress at Old Navy this weekend. It’s blue, ankle length with wide straps that I find so much better than the spaghetti straps. My girls are by no means small so I need a bit of real support there. There’s a black dress I’ve been eyeing at Target, but I won’t buy it until I get a racer back bra to go with it.

-I won another vintage Gucci bag on eBay last night. This one didn’t have a date or year listed, but it is very similar to my current one so I figure it’s from the early 1990s too. The main difference between the two is that it has the large green and red stripe versus the smaller stripes on the current bag. I’m very excited for it to get here. The shipping was free so it’s going to be 7-14 days according to the auction estimate.

-I’m still on the hunt for a good pair of comfortable sandals that don’t cost a fortune. I have a hard time finding ones that take into my shoe size and my lymphedema. I may just have to spring for the Birkenstocks I’ve been looking at for months on end. I wore my last pair until the literally fell apart while I was walking.

-I’ve finally made my hair decision. I’m cutting it off and going with a pixie cut. It’s been about twelve years since I’ve had my hair straightened chemically and I’m kind of scared. I’m not even sure if a salon will do it on the first visit. My biggest fear is that I will look like a boy. I’ve had short hair before, but I was like 21 and now I’m 30. I’m going to have to bite the bullet and just do it.

Things I *heart*

I love Dr. Bronner’s peppermint shampoo. On my lunch break last week I went to a hair supply store with a co-worker and picked up a small bottle for under $4. My goal was to try it out because I had been unwilling to order it online despite the glowing reviews. I am SO glad I did. I used a quarter sized amount and it lathered pretty much my whole head; the smell was strong and sweet and my scalp felt so clean it was tingling after I was done washing my locs. I think I am going to get a few more of the small size in different scents to see which one I like best. If you can get past the “sermons” or whatever they are on the bottle, you’ll be very glad you picked this up. I also got some Vitamin E hair oil too (more on this mass of hair of mine in a later post)

I love Bath and Body Works Lemon scented lotion (I’m drafting this at work so I’m not sure of the exact name). I got the White Citrus perfume (and body wash which they took from me at the airport when I flew home for a funeral earlier this month) and I’m in love with that too. I have a thing for lemon/citrus this summer. I’ve never been a fan of it, but something’s changed. I’ll keep the Armani Code for the fall and winter months.

I did manage to get one maxi dress so far. I got it at K&G during the mini shopping spree the BF and I went on. Considering I’m almost 6 feet tall Maxi dresses never seem quite long enough. I got a cute black and white Ikat inspired print with a contrasting pattern at the bottom for aout $20. I’m going to wear it this weekend when we go to The Taste Of Philadelphia and an art festival. I may try to go back to K&G when my little sister flies in next week. Or I may look at the outlets at Atlantic City when I take her to the boardwalk. The next thing on my list is a good pair of sandals. I really want another pair of Birkenstocks, but I’m cheap so I’m looking

Started planning the BF’s birthday trip to Charlotte in August. I’m on the lookout for cute dresses (hopefully maxis) and comfortable sandals.

New purchase

My latest purchase is on its way here from Florida. It’s a 1990s Gucci doctor bag I snagged on eBay last night. I set a max bid and went to bed thinking I’d get sniped. When I got up this morning it was mine for about half of my max bid!

On the Horizon…

Way back in a land called 2007 I was a pretty regular blogger. I posted everyday without many empty days. I actually was happy to be in the spirit of writing again. Sadly I erased those entries due to personal issues and although the magic of the Interwebs (lol) gave me some of them back, a lot of what I wrote is still missing. It wasn’t anything grand, just the musing of a girl growing, but at least I was writing right?

Anyway, since then I have started this fashion based blog, but it has been neglected since I got my new job. It’s not intentional, just a victim of the life of a commuting government employee. I still have the best of intentions to post my outfits, but I haven’t had much motivation to do so after a frustrating commute in and out of Philadelphia (curse you Broad Street and the Ben Franklin Bridge! Curse you Route 42/Route 55 Interchange!), but I’m thinking of ways to get back into the swing of it. I’m thinking it may take picking out and posting outfits a week at a time instead of everyday.

That being said, I’m going to try to get back to posting creative non-fiction or personal essay type things in order to get back into the habit of writing. I have pretty much stopped writing since I earned my MFA and my fear is that I am completely burned out. At minimum I can do this. So what does that mean for The Fledgling Fashionista? Well, it means I may be switching the focus of this blog to include more creative writing and/or moving back over to The See-Line Woman Chronicles for non-fashion related things. What I will not do is start another blog. I have a third one called Painted Corners that I haven’t even put a post on yet. The premise of that blog is what it feels like to be overeducated (and sometimes underemployed) in a world that drills into its children to go to college. That means that in the last 2-3 years I have had my three current blogs on WordPress and incarnations of my original blog on Blogger.

So look forward to the coming weeks to a possible change in format or at least one massive weekly post.

I hope all has been well with everyone!
